My interest in childbirth education began in 2001, after the birth of my first child, a son whom I delivered naturally in a hospital, with a nurse midwife (CNM), and with the support of my husband. After our own amazing and empowering experience, we were surprised at how little people around us knew about natural childbirth, and how many people we saw making uninformed choices. It was an exciting realization that I could train to become an instructor myself.  Like the teacher who gave us the the information that changed our experience forever, I too could participate in getting the message of natural birth out.

I was trained in 2004 and have been teaching ever since. In 2008, I earned my RN and I have found the experience greatly helpful in deepening my understanding of the physiology involved in pregnancy, labor, and birth as well as postpartum and breastfeeding.

It came as a surprise to some that in spite of my medical education I chose to deliver my second child, a daughter, at home with a lay midwife (CPM) in 2008. We simply had the confidence in the natural process of labor and delivery, and the experience to know that natural birth is not a medical procedure. We also trusted the expertise of our midwife to oversee the process and refer us to medical help if needed. In the end, we were happy that our healthy pregnancy ended in a healthy baby girl, born safely and easily at home.

In addition to my own birth experiences, my twelve years of teaching in Wilmington have given me great exposure to the birthing community here, and I am familiar with many of the health care providers (Nurse-midwifery practices, OB practices, CPMs) as well as the birthing center practices at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Therefore, I am able to provide specific information tailored to each couple's situation. Expectant couples come to my class from all avenues of life; I have had high school students take my class, and I have even had medical doctors take my class! Every class, every couple, and every birth story teaches me something more.

It is an honor for me to be a part of this pivotal time in a couple's life, when they are becoming a family. I absolutely love teaching these classes.
