I became a Bradley Method® instructor after taking the course when I was pregnant and subsequently had a natural birth. The process evoked a passion in me and I decided I wanted to share this with other women.
My philosophy is all about EMPOWERMENT! There is a lot of fear and misunderstanding in our culture around childbirth and breastfeeding, but I believe the more you know, the more you are able to embrace these "controversial" situations and make decisions that are right for you and your family, based on your instincts and your knowledge. Moms always strive to do what they feel is right for their kids, and sometimes what we feel is right is just limited to what we know at that moment...ask any mom who has more than one kid if she did anything different the next time around :) Let's face it, we live in a culture that says C-sections, planned inductions, formula, epidurals and hospital births, etc are no big deal, so unless you take it into your hands to explore that cultural mind set, you may not know you CAN deviate from the norm of our society, and do so with confidence and without unnecessary risk. I believe you should learn about it on your own, make your OWN decision based on what feels right to you. I feel that our bodies were perfectly designed to do this. Not only is it not scary to birth naturally, it can be AMAZINGLY POWERFUL, especially when we are prepared physically, mentally, spiritually. Another benefit: through our classes, we educate the husbands/partners so that they can overcame any fears they may have, become active participants in the pregnancy/birthing process, and become (tactfully) staunch, educated advocates for mommy and baby. In fact, many of my graduating couples say that the education that the partner gained, and, consequently, the important role as coach he or she was able to play in the pregnancy and birth, were among the best benefits for them. In addition to labor and birthing, we cover nutrition, breastfeeding, exercise and communication between partners. My hope is that my students take from this class information that they can use to be better parents and partners for the rest of their lives...and have fun in the process! | |
