I am a mother of three amazing children. My husband and I had our first, Eli in a hospital, attended by a midwife in March of 2010. My labor was a peaceful, powerful, spiritual journey. We remained at home for the majority of it because that is where I was most comfortable and after taking the Bradley classes, we were very confident and didn’t view birth as something to fear. Looking deeply into our son’s eyes for the first time and being able to cuddle him immediately was incredible and something that we will never forget. Having delivered our son naturally after 27 hours of labor gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment that I had never felt to that extent before.

After finding out that we were pregnant with twin girls about two years later, my first reaction was of fear that we would not be able to have the same Bradley birth due to being immediately labeled “high risk” once twins were discovered. We were not happy with this label and everything that it entailed so we searched far and wide to find an obstetrician that was respectful of our “hands off approach.” We finally found a wonderful doctor who was over an hour away but we made the trek in hopes of our dream birth the second time. Unfortunately the one requirement for him to deliver twins vaginally was a vertex (head down) Twin A (first baby to emerge). At the last minute, head down Aliza decided to flip in order to cuddle with her sister, Corinne in utero. We tried everything to encourage her to turn back around but she was just comfortable. I was very disappointed to have a cesarean after all our work to avoid one but in the end, our girls were born strong and healthy in January of 2013. The girls were 39.5 weeks which is a pretty long gestation for twins.  I suspect the diet and exercises that we learned while taking Bradley classes during my first pregnancy contributed to our babies being so healthy and having no complications. The Bradley classes also taught us that due dates are estimates and babies are often forced to be born prematurely either by induction or scheduled cesarean. We luckily knew enough to fight for every week to keep our girls in as long as they needed.

My reason for telling our birth stories is to be honest. I would love to be able to say that I birthed my twins vaginally with dimmed lights and soft music but that just wasn’t the case. Sometimes things go according to our plans and sometimes they don’t. The bottom line is that every baby, mother, and pregnancy is unique and we have to trust our babies and our bodies. They do what they do for a reason, even if we don’t understand it. The most important thing we can do as parents is to educate ourselves so that we are informed consumers of prenatal care. I hope to empower parents to view birth as the utterly amazing experience that it has the potential to be. Congratulations and I hope to have the pleasure of meeting you in class.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I’m so glad that your search for a quality childbirth class has led you to the Bradley Method.® The truth is, Bradley is so much more than just a “childbirth class.” Due to its comprehensiveness, there are topics that are covered and exercises that you will practice that you will not find in a typical childbirth class. You will learn to be an informed consumer of medical care for yourself and your baby. You will also learn what you can do to increase the chances of a low risk pregnancy and decrease the chances of complications and invasive medical interventions. Finally, you are likely to come out of the process educated and confident in your body’s ability to do what it was designed for. Please explore my page to learn more about Bradley, view detailed information about my classes, and read my personal birth stories if you wish.
