Hello! I’m Roxanne Lewis, a mom of two and an affiliated instructor of The Bradley Method© in Western, Oklahoma. I love love love natural birth and am so grateful we found The Bradley Method©! When my husband and I first realized we were expecting, I knew NOTHING about birth other than what I learned from movies (those are all totally accurate, right?). If you had asked me if I was going to go the “epidural route,” I probably would have said something like, “I think I’ll TRY to go natural, but I’m definitely not opposed to getting one if I decide I want one later.” Wow, how my views have changed since taking Bradley™ classes!
That being said, being demobilized by an epidural and ending up on my back for the duration of labor did sound miserable. My PA and a friend recommended The Bradley Method©. The cost of classes and the distance, though, deterred us our first pregnancy, so we hoped reading the book would be sufficient. We ended up with a very painful induction, an epidural, some adverse effects from drugs, and a hard recovery. When we got pregnant with our second baby 4 months later, we decided to buckle down and take classes, and I’m so grateful we did. The classes made all the difference for our birth experience for two main reasons: 1) when our 12 weeks were over we were INFORMED and could confidently make decisions regarding our care and 2) the hands-on practice, relaxation techniques, and labor rehearsals gave us the tool-belt we truly needed to have a peaceful birth. Our second birth was not only EASY, but relatively painless. Never once did I think, “Boy, an epidural sounds nice right about now.” For the most part, it was fun, and I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way.
I love recounting Nathan’s birth story in my mind, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget. Knowing birth could be this way, I became a fanatic about passing along this information to anyone who would listen!
